An Eye For Design.
An Iconic design that served as the backdrop to the worldwide new years celebrations.

The Sky Is Not The Limit
In London, the focal point was and has been for a number of years, the London Eye. If you don’t know, it is a giant 135 metre ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames in close proximity to Big Ben.
The London Eye was built for the millenium and I remember at the time it received a mixed reception as it broke new ground. It was raised from barges on the River Thames to take its place as an innovative addition to the London skyline. The design was fantastic and the eye quite rightly takes a prominent place in graphics showing London landmarks. However, the most impressive thing was the single minded determination of the designers, Julia Barfield and David Marks, who overcame real oposition and technical issues to bring their aspirations to reality.
Following The Innovators
As with any ground breaking innovation the London Eye became a trailblazer for similar wheel stuctures in the UK and in other parts of the world. So the morale of this blog as we move into a new year is that following the innovators can bring rewards, but those who are bold and break new ground are hailed as the true leaders in their chosen areas.
“London is one of the most civilised places in the world for the procedure of making architecture and urban design.”
― Renzo Piano
